Information About Stanley Laboratory

Established in 1996, The Stanley Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University explores the impact of infectious agents on the development and pathology of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Funding for the laboratory is provided entirely by the Stanley Medical Research Institute. Research activities at the laboratory aim to advance understanding of the biological underpinnings of these psychiatric disorders.

Key Activities

The Stanley Laboratory conducts various programs and research activities, including:

  • Postdoctoral Fellowship Program: Focuses on training in neurovirology, neuropathology, and the epidemiology of serious psychiatric diseases.
  • Annual Symposium: Hosts a symposium each year that highlights topics related to brain disease biology.
  • Serologic Studies: Employs a robotic system capable of high-throughput analysis of serum and cerebrospinal fluids. This system screens for antibodies to infectious agents like Herpes Simplex Virus (Types 1 and 2), Cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr Virus, Human Herpes Virus Type 6, Toxoplasma, Influenza A, and Influenza B. These analyses are offered free of charge to collaborating researchers.
